Cape and Cowl's New Comic Book Day Reviews! January 21, 2020

Every week we go home on Tuesday night and read a bunch of comics to be ready for New Comic Book Day. Sometimes we write up little blurbs about them to put out in the shop so people know what’s what. In case you can’t make it in or just want to have a game plan before you visit, check out this week’s reviews!

Guardians ot Galaxy 1.jpg

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #1

The Guardians are recovering from an epic battle. They had to take down this rogue religion. It was a whole thing. So now they’re just hanging and they want to just chill for a bit. Hahaha. No. That’s obviously not happening. The Gods of Olympus, Zues, Aphrodite, the whole gang, have been reborn as galactic conquerors and they are coming for our universe! Rocket better have come pretty good tricks up the sleeves of that sweetass suit if our crew stands half a chance here.

Superman 19.jpg

SUPERMAN #19

Some big Superman fan around the shop, we won’t name names of course, but some big Superman fan here was convinced Superman revealing his secret identity to the world was going to go real bad, real fast. But this issue makes a great point: It’s not like it’s a surprise to any bad guys that Superman is tight with the Daily Planet or Metropolis. Supes has been thick as thieves with them since day one! This reveal is going to have some big impact, but how?!

Family Tree 3.jpg

FAMILY TREE #3

Meg is a young girl who is rather quickly turning into a tree. Her mom is freaking out. Her Grandpa is pissed off because he knows this tree thing happens to run in the family. Good news is, Grandpa knows someone who can help. Bad news is, there’s no stopping it. Our girl is going to become a tree and join “the roots.” This book is so weird yet we know it’s about to make us start leaking tears at any moment. Highly recommended!

Far Sector 3.jpg

FAR SECTOR #3

Our new Green Lantern has been assigned to protect a city of 20 billion aliens who have had their emotions completely stripped of them by law. Surely these same laws apply to the wealthy and people of power, right? There’s no way there could be an upper class that gets to live by a different set of rules. That’s a completely ridiculous idea… right? This series takes a turn towards some timely social commentary and we are super here for it.

Kidz 1.jpg

KIDZ #1

Goonies meets the Walking Dead featuring characters who look like they walked straight out of a Gorillaz video. A bunch of kids doing what they have to to survive and recording the whole thing for their youtube channel while they do it. Awesome!

Marauders 6.jpg

MARAUDERS #6

Ahoy, mutants! Our heroes’ swashbuckling adventures continue in an all-out brawl against Hate-Monger and X-Cutioner! But when an even more calculating adversary makes their move, it’s sink or swim for Captain Kate Pryde! This one is hilarious, heart-pounding, and hot as Hellfire!

Excalibur 6.jpg

EXCALIBUR #6

Our party of sword & sorcery mutants have reached a boss battle against Morgan Le Fay herself! But just what is Apocalypse up to?! Tini Howard continues to shine on characterization & expands the Braddock legacy, while Marcus To delivers his strongest work on the book to date!

Batman 87.jpg

BATMAN #87

James Tynion IV had some big shoes to fill when he took over from Tom King. You know we love us some Tom King. But tell you what, he’s doing a great job! It’s definitely a change of pace, but we’re already completely hooked. Who is orchestrating this takeover of Bruce Wayne’s plans to revive Gotham City? Why did they need to hire the 5 most expensive assassins in the world to do it? And do they know how much trouble they’re in with the city’s costumed villains?!

American Jesus 2.jpg

AMERICAN JESUS #2

18 years ago Luciana was a virgin who gave birth to a baby girl she named Catalina. ust before she had the baby she was taken in by a group who swore to protect both mom and baby. This group also believes all priests are satanists, Washington D.C. was built in the shape of a pentagram as a tribute to the Antichrist, and most importantly, that Catalina is the new messiah. All of this is completely ridiculous. Unless of course, it isn’t…

Basketful of Heads 4.jpg

BASKETFUL OF HEADS #4

June is in serious trouble. Some very bad people are after her because they think she knows where her cop boyfriend might be hiding a bunch of money. Sure, she has a magic axe that can cut people’s heads off and somehow keep them alive. And sure, she seems to be able to handle herself pretty well with it. But we’re legitimately concerned there’s nobody she can trust in her little town and we’re fairly concerned she’s not done chopping heads!
